GUITAR TUNINGS

My Canuck friend, Jim Leahy -- an editor/writer/desktop publisher/amateur guitarist -- has compiled this page of Joni Mitchell guitar tunings. Feel free to e-mail him with any questions or comments.

The following is a list of over 90 Joni Mitchell guitar songs and their tunings (piano and dulcimer songs are not included). This list does not claim to be 100% accurate. In a few cases, I am close to the right tuning, but one string may be out. If you feel that I've missed a string or two, please let me know, and I will fix it. Because of my busy workload, I am no longer able to give chords or left-hand shapes for any songs. You're on your own. So experiment! Have fun!

I have compiled these tunings from a number of sources: the ftp Nevada archives (now defunct, alas); Joel Bernstein's tabs for the songbooks For the Roses, Mingus, Night Ride Home, and Turbulent Indigo (the only songbooks of her albums that include guitar tabs), as well as from my own obsessive listening! For the Roses tabs are also included in the Joni Mitchell Songbook, Volume II, published by Warner Bros. I would also like to acknowledge the work of Howard Wright, whose tabs and tunings at various Internet sites have contributed to the thoroughness of this page. Thanks also to Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers and his comprehensive article in Acoustic Guitar magazine (August 1996) for supplying the tuning to Black Crow. Of course, thanks to Joni herself, for her creative explorations of the magical ways of tuning six simple strings, as well as to the lesser-known guitar pioneers who inspired her.

Many of Joni Mitchell's tunings are based on the traditional D and G tunings. For example, a simple way to visualize the C tuning is to think of it as the D tuning tuned one step lower. Joni's current favourite tuning is called the "Canadian" tuning (the origins of this tuning are not clear) -- really just the D tuning with the D (4th) string tuned up a whole tone to E (e.g., "Passion Play"). For other songs in this tuning, the strings are still tuned the same in relation to each other, but a semitone or a tone lower ("Sunny Sunday", "Yvette in English"). Don't forget, Joni's voice has lowered over the years, so songs she used to sing in D tuning, for example, may be in C tuning for current live versions.

Guitarists who do not read music can consult the online guitar archives web site, which has tabs for many Joni songs, including examples of the number method of denoting different tunings. Many of these tabs give detailed left-hand chord shapes as well. You can reach this site at the following link:

OLGA GUITAR ARCHIVES

There are two newsgroups that occasionally include tabs of Joni's songs. They are

alt.guitar.tab
rec.music.makers.guitar.tablature.

I am currently working on a revised page that will include Joni's own number system for denoting her different tunings. This simplified system should be a blessing for those who do not read music or who have trouble seeing (or may not care about) the relationship between the tunings.

If you wish more information about these tunings, or if you'd like to point out any errors or share your own discoveries about Joni's tunings, please E-MAIL me.
